Traditional health insurance as people have known for years involves fee-for-service or indemnity coverage. With this type of coverage, policyholders have the option of choosing the doctor, hospital, and other healthcare providers preferred. In addition, if the policyholder for this type of health insurance were to need care from a medical specialist, no referral would be required. This means that the insurance company would not have the right to make the determination whether care from a specialist was needed or not.

While the fee-for-service coverage appears a great option, people that have this type of health insurance know all too well that it is not always what it appears to be. Typically, a traditional type of health insurance policy would involve the patient paying a higher level of out-of-pocket expenses then what would be covered with managed care plans. In addition, deductibles are usually extremely high and once the deductible was paid, the insurance company would be responsible for 80% of the medical bill.

Health insurance has been a subject of strong debate for years with most consumers believing in the freedom of seeing the doctor of choice. However, even if a person could see the preferred doctor, the amount paid by the health insurance company would be based on a specific formula. In this case, insurance companies consider rates of other physicians in the same geographical area to find an average.

Therefore, the amount paid would only be for expenses deemed “reasonable and customary” based on the average cost of other doctors. For instance, if a patient were to see a doctor that charged $200 for a visit, the health insurance company would look at other like doctors in the same area to get an average of what they would charge for the same service. If the average ended up at $160, the insurance company would only pay 80% of that amount. The remaining $32 would be covered by the patient’s deductible and anything left over would be the responsibility of the doctor.

Traditional health insurance premiums are typically higher than that of other plans. Even deductibles are higher, falling anywhere between $400 and $1,300 depending on the insurance company, the policy, and the policyholder. In addition, the amount covered with a traditional health insurance policy would be based on the person’s specific health problem. In fact, some long-term illnesses would have harsh restrictions applied.

People trying to find affordable health insurance would need to spend time and effort in looking at all options. Employers are trying to make coverage more affordable for employees but they too have their hands tied. However, when comparing the cost of health insurance offered by an employer versus what a person would buy on his or her own company offered policy is typically more affordable.

The good news is that today, it has become a serious issue within the government in that people need proper healthcare and without insurance, this is simply not possible. Therefore, companies are working hard to come up with solutions that would make it possible for a greater number of people to have health insurance coverage. People need to remember that when it comes to insurance, no one policy is a “one size fits all.” While options might be more affordable for employees using employer’s plans, it would still be worth investigating other possibilities, looking at different companies, policies, and coverage options.

For individuals that are starting a new job, it would be recommended for them to consider not just current healthcare concerns but future needs as well. Usually, larger corporations offer various types of long-term care or disability and while the employee might think it unnecessary, planning could save them tremendous heartache down the road. Of course, people are going to purchase health insurance they can afford but if possible, consumers should try to go with the highest level of coverage if possible.

Now there’s a risky question, sure to upset some people in the healthcare business. Pharmaceutical companies, clinics and hospitals hate the fact that some people continue to live without health insurance, and probably despise people who encourage this rebellious streak all the more so. After all, nobody should have to pay for health insurance. Just look at other countries in the U.K. or in Canada that provide free healthcare to their citizens. In a perfect world, American healthcare would be absolutely free of charge. Service with a smile, right? Lung surgery should be just as easy as ordering a Big Mac or a pack of cigarettes.

That said, we have to get in touch with the real world. Like it or not, America does not offer free healthcare, and even if they wanted to, it’s virtually impossible in this time of economic crisis. There is the option of low-cost clinics that are mainly non-profit institutions and that charge according to how much income an individual makes. Nevertheless, these clinics do charge for their services, much like all hospitals, clinics and physicians do.

Yes, it is completely legal to live without health insurance. Some might even argue that health insurance is not required, particularly if an individual takes care of himself. However, the difference between having insurance and having no insurance is evident when you are given a $20,000 medical bill! Emergency room hospitals typically charge thousands of dollars for treatment. If you can’t immediately pay the bill then you will be billed the amount and this unpaid debt goes on your credit report.

While emergency rooms cannot turn away ailing patients, clinics do have that right and usually don’t want to deal with patients that have no insurance program. The reason being that most patients who lack health insurance are incapable of paying their bills and so the clinic eventually loses money. Even the clinics that do offer treatment to patients without insurance expect payment in full—and this bill could cost anywhere from $75 to hundreds or thousands of dollars depending on tests and treatment given.

You don’t need insurance to get a prescription, not to buy pharmaceutical drugs. However, without any form of health insurance you could be paying 50-75% more than you have to. In the end, paying for health insurance actually saves you money. The likelihood that you will never get sick or need a doctor’s attention is very low indeed. Human beings are always suffering from something; we are not invulnerable to injury, disease, or mental and physical dysfunctions.

Some individuals never worry about health insurance because the corporation they work for orders group health insurance for its employees. If the policy is a good one, then there may be no reason to look outside the company for coverage. However, persons who are self-employed or who have a minimal amount of coverage with the group policy should be on the lookout for an affordable health insurance plan. If you have a family, then it’s not simply yourself that you are denying medical attention. You also have to worry about your spouse and children and take into consideration all of their physical and pharmaceutical needs.

Another commonly made mistake in health insurance is that persons wait too long before ordering a policy. They figure there’s no sense in wasting money while they are young and healthy. Unfortunately, disease and other medical problems can appear quickly and often times without warning. By the time you are affected by a serious injury or a medical condition, the insurance company thinks of you as too much of a risk. For your own physical wellbeing and for that of your family’s, look for an affordable health insurance policy today.

Today more and more people are finding themselves without employer-sponsored health insurance. They may be unemployed, or it could be they work for a small business that can’t afford to offer health benefits. For some workers, their employer’s insurance is too costly to afford, while for others, coverage is woefully inadequate.

Shop Around for Individual Health Insurance

Regardless of why you’re without employer-based insurance, it’s crucial to have some form of medical coverage. Today many companies are specializing in offering individual health insurance that’s affordable. You can take advantage of individual health insurance to cover yourself and your spouse and children, depending on your needs.

If you do some shopping around, you’ll find individual cheap health insurance premiums vary greatly. You’ll need to take the time to evaluate coverage and features as you evaluate costs. Consider limitations and exclusions, policies about choosing healthcare providers, and the cost of co-payments and deductibles.

More Ways to Save on Healthcare Costs

In addition to comparison shopping, you can save money on individual health insurance in a variety of ways. If you’re in good health and you’re only interested in coverage for major medical expenses due to accidental injury or a serious illness, catastrophic health insurance may be a less costly option that will provide you with adequate coverage.

Taking advantage of locally offered free health screenings, checkups and immunizations is another way to control the cost of healthcare. You may be able to save on the cost of an office visit if you take advantage of free screenings for blood pressure or cholesterol. Some hospitals and clinics even offer free flu shots and mammograms.

Many prescription drug plans and health insurance companies offer discounts if you order prescription drugs through the mail instead of purchasing them at a pharmacy. In most cases, you can receive a three-month supply of medication for the same cost as a one-month supply purchased at a store. This can add up to considerable savings if you regularly take any prescription drugs. It’s also a good idea to ask if less expensive generic options are available for name brand prescriptions you must fill.

Taking part in preventative healthcare practices is another way you may be able to cut health insurance costs. Some health insurance companies offer discounts to individuals who receive recommended yearly checkups and screenings. Ask your insurance company if they currently offer preventative care discounts, as it could be a new policy put into effect without your notification.

One important way to control health costs that many people overlook is their ability to reduce the need for medical care by staying healthy in the first place. If you’re overweight and out of shape, exercising regularly and losing weight will improve your health. Being overweight and inactive is linked to a variety of illnesses. If you smoke, drink too much or neglect to eat a healthy diet, you’re putting yourself at risk for health problems. Simply improving your eating habits and taking a daily multi-vitamin can boost your immunity and reduce the chances you’ll need medical care for minor illnesses.

For decades, individuals have taken affordable employer-based health insurance for granted, and they assumed whenever healthcare was necessary, it would be available at a very low cost. Today this is no longer the case. In addition to taking individual responsible for health insurance costs, it’s also important for everyone to take responsibility for managing and improving their individual health. Preventative care, living a health life style and looking for ways to control the costs of healthcare are effective ways to help make health insurance more affordable.
